Waltz Dance Classes

The Waltz Dance Style

Easy to learn and master, the Waltz is one of the most popular ballroom dance styles in the world. Known for its gentle grace, it is a favourite among wedding couples, as the romantic floating motion of the dance creates a sense of elegance and peace, symbolic of the future the newlyweds will share.

An easily recognisable dance, the Waltz is a great choice for those wishing to work on their balance, posture and control. At Arthur Murray we have Waltz lessons to suit every skill level from beginners, through to experienced dancers.

History of the Waltz

Although considered one of the most beautiful and tasteful dances today, the Waltz has a surprising history of scandal and controversy.

In the early 1700s the Waltz was danced primarily in rural European peasant communities, particularly in the Bavarian region. As the popularity of the dance spread, those in ‘proper society’ were shocked by the intimate embrace and labelled the dance as immoral simply because the man was required to wrap his arm around his partner’s waist.

Eventually the Waltz made its way into the ballrooms and dance halls of German high society, though as late as 1825, it was still officially described as “riotous and indecent”.

Waltz Music

The romantic and graceful music that accompanies the Waltz is danced in 3/4 time with an emphasis on the first beat of every measure. Waltz music has a slow tempo, usually between 84-90 BPM (Beats per Minute). Here are our Top Ten favorite songs to Waltz to:

  1. Tales from the Vienna Woods – Johann Strauss
  2. Can you feel the love tonight – Elton John
  3. Moon River – Henry Mancini & His Orchestra
  4. Could I Have This Dance – Anne Murray
  5. By Your Side – Sade
  6. Around the World – Nat King Cole
  7. Crazy Love – Van Morrison
  8. When a Man Loves a Woman – Percy Sledge
  9. What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong
  10. The Sleeping Beauty OP. 66 (Ballet) – Tchaikovsky

We were interested in learning Tango for our daughter's wedding last year, but here we are in our second year at AM, Crows Nest - dancing has now become our passion, due in large part, to the excellence of teaching and supportive atmosphere of this studio! The journey is long and I so envy the folks who have started years ago to achieve the beauty and grace of ballroom and the seduction of Latin dancing. We are determined to continue !!!read more
