Swing Dance Classes

The Swing Dance Style

Swing is a high energy, playful, triple rhythm dance that makes everyone want to get up and move. Think rock and roll and A-line skirts, with fast paced spins and turns and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from a Swing dance lesson. This fun dance is easy to master and versatile enough that you can easily incorporate your own personality and unique dancing style as you progress.

Swing is a particularly great dance for dance partners who are not romantically involved, or aren’t yet comfortable with the intimacy displayed in some of the Latin dances. Swing focuses on being playful and having fun, rather than creating a sensual, intimate connection between partners.

At Arthur Murray we offer Swing lessons to couples or singles at every skill level. Contact us today for your free lesson.

History of Swing Dancing

The term ‘Swing’ is used to refer to a combination of 1920s era dances that make up the basis of modern swing dancing, including the Lindy Hop, the Charleston, the Jitterbug and the Jive.

Considered to be one of the ‘All-American’ dances, Swing first appeared in the 1920s, gaining popularity across the country and appearing in dance clubs and street dances through the 30s and 40s, before becoming a fixture on the dance scene. The Swing has maintained popularity as each new generation discovers its high energy and light-hearted character.

Swing Dance Music

Upbeat and fun, Swing dance moves are adaptable to a variety of tempos and go equally well with classic rock and roll, contemporary pop, rhythm and blues and big band style music, making it a favourite among music lovers everywhere.

We were interested in learning Tango for our daughter's wedding last year, but here we are in our second year at AM, Crows Nest - dancing has now become our passion, due in large part, to the excellence of teaching and supportive atmosphere of this studio! The journey is long and I so envy the folks who have started years ago to achieve the beauty and grace of ballroom and the seduction of Latin dancing. We are determined to continue !!!read more

We started dancing in 2009 for our wedding - and had so much fun learning that we kept it up. They have incredible flexibility to do as much as you want, on your schedule, and consist of staff that appreciate busy working (and family!) lives --- while encouraging you to always improve yourselves! As a couple learning they have accommodated both our learning styles very well.read more
